Primary Purpose:
Perform skilled and semi-skilled labor in the various aspects of athletic facility maintenance. Role will include responsibilities for the maintenance, irrigation, repairs and related service activities for the district athletic complex. Directly participate in the daily maintenance and preparation of all playing surfaces, train all staff members in techniques to maintain athletic fields. Follow operational procedures to optimally maintain the playing surface of the field. Experience, special skills, knowledge, and abilities to maintain athletic fields at the highest competitive levels are required.


Minimum Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or a regional agency)
Valid Texas driver’s license (must have a driving record that is acceptable according DPS/DVISD Transportation)
Shall be subject to testing for use of alcohol or controlled substance that violates law or federal regulations
Shall possess / or obtain proper certification for broadcasting herbicides and fertilizers within 180 days
Obtain irrigation technician certification for the repair and maintenance of the irrigation system within 180 days
Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check. Non-refundable fee (approximately $50.00) paid by the employee.


Knowledge/Skills:
Ability to read and understand written instructions
Ability to communicate with staff verbally, electronically and in written form
Ability to operate tractor and landscaping equipment
Ability to operate riding mower, power tools, hand tools etc.
Ability to work independently
Ability to lift a minimum of fifty (50) pounds


Experience:
One-year experience in landscape maintenance, preferred
One-year supervisory experience

The Maintenance/Lead Athletics Groundskeeper promotes improvement of instruction through activities such as the following:
• Assist in developing specific goals and plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish the District maintenance goals.
• Supports athletic department goals through service of athletic facilities
• Coordinates service work with athletic department to limit the impact of service on athletic events

Organization Improvement
The Maintenance/Lead Athletics Groundskeeper promotes efforts to improve the school or organization through activities such as the following:
• Keep vehicles, equipment, and tools in safe operating condition.
• Inspect and adjust tools and equipment for safety and efficiency and perform preventive maintenance as needed.
• Maintain safe and attractive facilities/grounds.

The Maintenance/Lead Athletics Groundskeeper promotes a positive tone for school or community relations through activities such as the following:
• Communicate with administrators and staff on daily work activities to achieve department goals.

Personnel Relations/Management


The Maintenance/Athletics Groundskeeper manages personnel effectively through activities such as the following:
• Operate the District’s Maintenance Management Software (Schooldude).
• Transport workers and equipment to job sites.
• Maintain and completes work schedule.


Organization Management
The Maintenance/Athletic Groundskeeper manages administrative, fiscal, and facilities functions responsibly through activities such as including but not limited to the following:
• Perform athletic field and grounds maintenance including mowing, aerating, topdressing, seeding, sodding, trimming, field
painting, irrigation and turf care, fertilizing; spray chemicals including insecticides, herbicides, soil conditioners and related
chemicals; follow proper safety precautions; care of trees and shrubs, proper pruning techniques and tree removal.
• Complete scheduled and unscheduled infield maintenance and repair work of baseball/softball fields including, watering
infields, repairing bases, pitching mounds, batter’s boxes and transition areas of infield and outfield.
• Provide service for fields to include but not limited to tilling, rolling and fertilizing soil; and maintain high traffic wear areas
on athletic fields.
• Perform maintenance of irrigation system including preventive maintenance, replacement of heads, broken pipes, winterization and summarization of irrigation system and monitor flow rates of fields.
• Monitor and service synthetic turf areas according to the warranty documents and service plan for all synthetic turf areas.
• Complete inspections of athletic playing surfaces and correct any hazards along with reporting the action plan to the designated athletic and maintenance supervisors.
• Manage the pregame preparation for athletic events to include; electrical checks and repairs, equipment set-up and breakdown, water service, custodial duties, and all game related duties as assigned.
• Identify equipment needs for each assigned project; organize work methods and procedures; ensure that the proper materials are available, and services to always provide access to athletic facility.
• Operate or drive a variety of specialized equipment utilized in assigned projects including tractors, lawn mowers, power and
hand tools such as chain saws, weed eaters, edgers and related equipment; assist in training others to use specialized equipment as necessary.
• Perform a variety of preventive maintenance and general maintenance repair work of equipment, buildings and facilities by
performing a variety of equipment renovation, semi-skilled plumbing, carpentry, roofing, painting and electrical work with
assistance from maintenance service techs.
• Perform maintenance of athletic areas and buildings; pick up paper and other debris; sweep entrances; clean and disinfect
drinking fountains and restrooms; replenish and maintain restroom supplies including soap dispensers, tissues and towels.

Professional Growth and Development
The Maintenance/Athletics Groundskeeper participates in professional growth and development through activities such as the
following:
• Attend training courses as specified by the District.
• Participate in continuing education courses
• Complete all related training for maintaining certification for irrigation and non-commercial applicators license


Qualities of Effective Maintenance/Lead Athletics Grounds Keeper:
The Maintenance/Athletics Groundskeeper exhibits qualities such as the following:
• Daily attendance and punctuality at work are essential functions of the job
• Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately.
• Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting, climbing, etc.

regulations, and guidelines that impose duties, requirements, or standards.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
• Lead and/or assist on facilities and maintenance projects.
• Assist with training new employees.
Equipment:
• Turf care and landscaping equipment, including but not limited to tractors, mowers, chain saws, edgers, weed trimmers,
electronic motors, generators, pumps, sprinklers, miscellaneous hand and power tools for grounds maintenance.
• Truck or van, trailers, lifts, etc.


Working Conditions:
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
• Maintain emotional control under stress and work with frequent interruptions.
• Repetitive hand motions, prolonged sitting, and prolonged use of equipment.
• Work irregular and extended work hours to include evenings, holidays and weekends.
• May require moderate standing, stooping, bending, lifting, walking, climbing, pulling, pushing, reaching, moving, and
carrying up to 50 lbs.
• Work indoors and outdoors of all district facilities and construction projects.
• Frequent district wide and occasional statewide travel.
• Frequent exposure to: temperature extremes (hot and cold), humidity extremes, noise, low or intense illumination
vibration. Occasional exposure to: biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, insects, mold, fungi, dust, toxic
chemicals etc.), work outside, work around moving objects or vehicles, work on slippery and uneven surfaces.
