Description

Primary Purpose:

Help special education teacher provide for physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities in special education setting. Assist in implementation of classroom programs, including self-help, behavior management, and instruction programs

Work under general supervision of principal and immediate direction of certified teacher.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Education/Certification:      

High school diploma or GED

Valid Texas Educational Aide certificate

NCLB Certification Required

               

Experience/Knowledge/Skills:

Ability to work with children with disabilities

Ability to follow verbal and written instruction

Ability to communicate effectively

Knowledge of general office equipment

Crisis Prevention & Intervention certified (CPI)

 

Experience:

One to two years experience working with children with disabilities

Instructional Management

The job coach promotes improvement of instruction through activities such as the following:

  • Teach basic transition classes

 

Organization Improvement

The job coach promotes efforts to improve the school or organization through activities such as the following:

  • Acquire training in the ECI process, Transition Plans, Parent Support, CBI, and ARD process
  • Initiate notification of transition of all students by 14 years and new students entering the district annually

Communication and Community Relations

The job coach promotes a positive tone for school or community relations through activities such as the following:

  • Coordinate Parent/Adult Student Workshops – SSI/Social Security, Estate Planning, Community Resources, Independent Living, and Recreation/Social Opportunities
  • Consult and manage CBI programming at the Junior High and High School (Volunteer opportunities, job development, and management of job coaches)

 

Organization Management

The job coach manages administrative, fiscal, and facilities functions responsibly through activities such as the following:

  • Initiate all 120-day meetings with parents and ECI program coordinators; schedule the required assessment; follow up at regular intervals
  • On an annual basis, determine the need for parent support formation.
  • Set up, coordinate, and submit required documentation for all ARD/IEPs for students in the Pre-Vocational class
  • Complete Transition Plans on those students involved in CBI programming
  • Document meetings and transition agencies (ECI and post graduate)

 

Professional Growth and Development

The job coach participates in professional growth and development through activities such as the following:

  • Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned to improve job performance

 

Qualities of Effective Job Coach

  • Daily attendance and punctuality at work are essential functions of the job
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately
  • Comply with District and Campus policies and procedures, as well as state and federal laws and regulations
  • Comply with the standards of conduct set out in Board Policy DH (Legal) and (Local) and with any other policies, regulations, and guidelines that impose duties, requirements, or standards

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • None

 

Equipment:

  • Wheelchair lift, ramp, personal computer, copier, typewriter, audiovisual equipment, laminating machine and telephone

Working Conditions:

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

  • Work irregular and extended work hours to include holidays and weekends
  • Work with frequent interruptions and maintain emotional control under stress
  • Frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing and pulling, regular heavy lifting of students
  • Biological exposure to bacteria and communicable diseases
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds
  • Work inside and outside, exposure to hot and cold temperatures
