Description

Primary Purpose:

Responsible for providing and implementing daily lesson plans according to the district’s requirements.  Manages the classroom environment, provide activities, materials, and promote student learning in the absence of the regular classroom teacher. 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Education/Certification

High School diploma or GED (Recognized by the Texas Education Agency or Regional Accrediting Agency)

Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check. Non-refundable fee (approximately $50) paid by employee.

Long-Term Assignment Incentive

A substitute is eligible for long term pay beginning on the 5th consecutive day in the same assignment.  A $10 bonus will added on the 6th day.  Long-term pay discontinues if the substitute is out for all or part of one day, resulting in a break in service of continuous days worked.  Substitutes who work all day on Friday will receive $5 added to their base pay for that day only.

Professionalism

The Educators' Code of Ethics is set forth in Texas Administrative Code to provide rules for standard practices and ethical conduct toward students, professional colleagues, school officials, parents, and members of the community.

Classroom Instruction and Management

The substitute promotes improvement of instruction and classroom management through activities such as the following:  

  • Follows teacher plans and present information and instruction to help students learn the subject matter and skills.
  • Maintains instruction that is compatible with the school and district curriculum goals.
  • Manages student behavior in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.  

Communication and Community Relations

The substitute promotes a positive tone for school or community relations through activities such as the following:  

  • Be a positive role model for students, support the mission of the District.
  • Interacts effectively with students, staff, and parents.

Qualities of an Effective Substitute

The substitute exhibits qualities such as the following:  

  • Daily attendance and punctuality at work are essential functions of the job.
  • Daily flexibility to changeover to different assignments as dictated by campus administration and school needs.  
  • Corrects unsafe conditions in work area that could cause an accident and inform campus principal of any conditions that are not correctable immediately.
  • Complies with District policies, as well as state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Complies with the standards of conduct set out in Board Policy DH (Legal) and (Local) and with any other policies, regulations, and guidelines that impose duties, requirements, and standards.  

Equipment

Computer, computer software programs and peripherals, teacher resource materials and equipment, printer, copier, and other equipment applicable to the position. 

 

Working Conditions:

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors  

  • Maintains emotional control under stress.
  • Works with frequent interruptions.
  • Frequent walking, standing, stooping, bending, pulling and pushing.
  • Occasional light lifting and carrying (15-44 pounds); may lift and move text books and classroom equipment.
  • District wide travel.
  • Frequent exposure to: temperature extremes (hot and cold), humidity extremes, noise, low or intense illumination vibration.
  • Occasional exposure to: biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, etc.), work outside, work around moving objects or vehicles, work on uneven surfaces.
