Description

Primary Purpose:

Oversees the operations of providing protection to school children at school crossings, as well as maintaining an orderly and safe movement of vehicular traffic to allow the children to cross safely; reporting any safety hazards that exist or other potential hazards; recruiting process for school crossing guards; training programs for school crossing guards; responds to complaints.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Education/Certification:              

High School diploma or GED (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or Regional Accrediting Agency)

Clear and valid Texas driver’s license

CPR certification

Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check. Non-refundable fee

  Approximately $50.00 paid by employee

 

Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of basic traffic and crossing regulations, laws and safety procedures related to school crossing

Knowledge of standard practices in the area of the assignment

Able to communicate fluently in English and Spanish preferred

Ability to maintain a school schedule and flexibility with hours

Ability to maintain accurate records

 

 

Experience:

Minimum two (2) years of crossing guard program or a similar program working with children and the public.

The crossing guard fosters a positive school or organization morale through activities such as the following:

 

  • Demonstrate safe practices related to assisting students, parents and staff to and from the home to the campus sites.
  • Maintains an orderly and safe movement of vehicular traffic to allow the children to cross safely
  • Responds to complaints.

 

 

Communication and Community Relations

The crossing guard promotes a positive tone for school or community relations through activities such as the following:

 

  • Communicate effectively with staff, parents, and community by projecting a positive image that enhances the district's mission.
  • Implement systems for clear and consistent communication of program information.
  • Ensure safe crossing practices with all stakeholders

 

Organization Management

The crossing guard manages the crossing functions responsibly through activities such as the following:

 

  • Reports any safety hazards that exist or other potential hazards
  • Demonstrates effective problem solving and decision making
  • Promote the use of researched-based crossing regulations
  • Ensure maintenance of records and management of reporting systems.

 

 

Professional Growth and Development

The crossing guard participates in professional growth and development through activities such as the following:

 

  • Meet with supervisors to examine reports, discuss strategies for improvement, and provide feedback related to crossing observations.
  • Implements recruiting process for school crossing guards
  • Meet with transportation and the staff to improve crossing program.
  • Plan and provide staff development for district and department

 

 

Qualities of an Effective Crossing Guard

The crossing guard exhibits the following qualities:  

 

  • Comply with district and campus policies and procedures, as well as state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Comply with the standards of conduct set out in Board Policy DH (Legal) and (Local) and with any other policies, regulations, and guidelines that impose duties, requirements, or standards.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Demonstrate a high level of personal integrity, a collaborative leadership style, and high ethical standards.
  • Keep informed of and comply with Federal/State/District and campus policies.
  • Compile, maintain and file all reports, records, and other required documents.
  • Daily attendance and punctuality at work.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation

 

Supervisory Responsibilities

None

 

Equipment

Computer, computer software programs and peripherals, printer, scanner, calculator, copier, fax, and other equipment applicable to the position.

 

Working Conditions:

  • Work with frequent interruptions and maintain emotional control under stress.
  • Visual acuity
  • Continual standing, walking, lifting (10-20 lbs.), carrying, stooping, bending, squating and kneeling.
  • Frequent exposure to hot and cold temperatures.
  • Frequent exposure to temperature extremes (hot and cold), humidity extremes, noise, low or intense illumination vibration. Occasional exposure to biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, insects, mold, fungi), work outside, work around moving objects or vehicles, work on uneven surfaces.
