Primary Purpose:

Responsible for providing direct and indirect support for elementary, middle, and high school counselors. Responsible for building, enhancing, and maintaining a counseling, college readiness and college-going culture framework for the district.  This framework will support capacity building and implementation of the district-wide counseling, college readiness, and college-going culture.  Provide direction and support in crisis management, consultation, supervision, training, and coaching to counselors, teachers, administrators, and other campus and district staff. Design counseling and college readiness programs that meet district program goals and objectives for all students.  Plan parent, student, and community activities to be implemented at the campuses across the district and coordinate staff development with the Curriculum & Instruction team. 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Education/Certification               

Master’s Degree

Valid Texas Counseling Certificate or Licensed Professional Counseliing (LPC) or Licensed Certified Social Worker (LCSW)

Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check. Non-refundable fee (approximately $50) paid

Knowledge and Skills: 

Knowledge of State law and Board policies related to school guidance and counseling and college and career readiness and mental health

Leadership & communication skills

Experience in providing consultation, supervision, training, and coaching to counselors, teachers, administrators, and other campus and district staff

Understanding of counseling best practices described in the Texas Education Agency School Counseling Objectives and the American School Counseling Association National Model

Understanding of programs, practices, and resources that enable the success of elementary, middle, and high school students

Knowledge of best practices for elementary and secondary transition programs, graduation requirements, student management systems, intervention programs for at-risk students, career and technical education programs, college readiness standards, post-secondary planning, and dual credit programs.

Depth of knowledge in creating and providing classroom guidance lessons; organizing and running small groups, and individual counseling sessions; using student management systems; consulting on student interventions, and providing experiences for students to educate themselves about careers, and the promotion of a post-secondary culture.

Crisis management planning, debriefing, and coordination mid-crisis

Effective analytical and problem-solving skills and the ability to collect, organize and analyze data

Technological skills with: Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Forms, Google hangouts, Skyward, Eduphoria, Google sites, web page design, and willing to learn more technology that will support job efficiency and effectiveness.

 

Experience:

Three (3) years’ of counseling experience

Secondary (9-12 grades) school counseling experience

Experience with PBIS, Restorative Practices/ Restorative Discipline

Organization Management

The coordinator manages administrative, fiscal, and facilities functions responsibly through activities such as the following:  

  • Oversee the design, implementation, and support of a comprehensive guidance and counseling program for effective implementation at all schools and across the district. 
  • Keep district counselors up-to-date on current research and best practices.
  • Provide consultation and training to counselors and other campus staff on academic guidance, counseling, student intervention, and post-graduation preparation programs.
  • Maintain regular communication with campus teams and campus principals to ensure the effective delivery of academic counseling as well as college and career readiness services.
  • Lead the continuous improvement of the guidance program.
  • Create an ongoing, trackable plan for monitoring student success and facilitation of wrap-around supports when students miss targets.
  • Review and coordinate the processing of all transcripts to ensure proper placement of students in classes and accurate transcript accounting and reporting.
  • Organize College Scholarship data tracking and reporting by students and counselors.
  • Coordinate and guide counselors and district in creating and supporting a college-going
  • Ensure HB 5 Requirements; PGPs, college readiness course needs, endorsement pathways are completed and updated yearly with parent meetings with appropriate required staff members documented by their signatures.
  • Facilitate Transcript Checks: complete credit checks, credit recovery, transcript accuracy, STAAR EOC accuracy confirmation completion, verify grade placement level, before the last week in March yearly.
  • Ensure completion of the ACC Dual Credit Paperwork and Advising, data tracking, monitoring, and advising.
  • Confirm DAEP Transitions meetings occur and create a tracking system for documentation of these transition meetings when students are going to and from DAEP & ensure follow-up supports are put in place to prevent recidivism.
  • Ensure and support the development and implementation of the combined Course Catalog and Career and Tech Fair;
  • Organize and maintain systems for assuring the accuracy of student high school graduation plans.
  • Work collaboratively with PEIMs, Registrars, College & Career staff, & other members of the counseling
  • Plan for students’ grade level transition activities with the Elementary, Middle, and High School Counselors; and,
  • The position will provide support in crisis management.  

Guidance

The coordinator will provide a relevant and effective guidance program through activities such as the following:  

  • Conduct monthly meetings with elementary, middle school and high school counselors to provide, training, coordinate activities and support professional learning and growth.
  • Assist campuses with mental health crisis management planning, response, and debriefs following incidents.
  • Conduct individual meetings with counselors and assist in problem-solving concerns and campus planning as deemed necessary by administration, data, or another source.
  • Lead the continuous improvement of the guidance and counseling program across the district.
  • Coordinate, develop, and provide professional learning opportunities to counselors as well as campus & district staff.
  • Demonstrate and facilitate the use of restorative practices, PBIS, Second Step and School Connect Character education as well as Bullying prevention and intervention.
  • Direct, facilitate, and support the work by counselors with 9th-12th graders on College and Career Readiness.
  • Ensure the implementation, setup, tracking, and follow up on for AIM, LST, or SST meetings on students needing academic, behavior, and attendance support.
  • Ensure advising for ACC, UT OnRamps, ECHS and other district programs (College Ready or Potential College Ready Students - STAAR EOC, TSI, PSAT).

Counseling & College Readiness

The coordinator will create and communicate a relevant and effective counseling program through activities such as the following:

  • The position will be responsible for the development and implementation of an aligned K-12 college and career counseling program.
  • Supporting program connections to the K-12 college and career programs like dual credit, dual enrollment, early college high school, advanced placement, and career readiness, along with, work experience programs, and training on career readiness assessments for students, parents, staff, and community.
  • The position will be responsible for providing consultation, input to counselors’ supervisors, training, and coaching to counselors, teachers, administrators, and other campus and district staff.
  • The position must design programs that match the Del Valle Independent School District program goals and objectives for all students.
  • Maintain and facilitate support of the district counseling Website for College Knowledge, Counselors, & Resources.
  • Run reports from various system to best support counselors in supporting highest college opportunities for students; Skyward or current data management system, Eduphoria, Google Analytics, On Data Suite, College Board, ACT, Accuplacer, FAFSA, Apply Texas, THECB, National Student Clearing
  • Respond to, organize activities around, and debrief for critical incidents in partnership with other district staff.
  • Engage in problem-solving with principals, counselors, and campus/district staff.
  • Prepare statistical and narrative reports weekly and monthly, as directed.
  • Facilitate, direct, and support the counseling of seniors in college decisions.
  • Facilitate, direct, and support the counseling of seniors on college financial aid decisions.
  • Train and facilitate the monitoring of grades of students and academic counseling, as needed.
  • Implement Suicide Prevention Information and trainer of trainer sessions to empower staff to work on prevention campaigns with students document and advertise these resources districtwide.
  • Coordinate a rotating crisis schedule between counselors and, in the event of an emergency, meet with the campus, district administration and serve as the liaison on communication about the emergency.
  • Demonstrate and facilitate mediation or restorative circles for students to assist in training staff and to provide for resolution.
  • Facilitate the accurate assessment of students’ and their families’ needs for referral and make referrals to appropriate agencies and services.
  • Monitor the use of learner support team (LST) meetings for students.

Student Assessment

The coordinator will assist with assessment through activities such as the following:  

  • Implement plans for ordering and administering the ASVAB, TSI, PSAT, ACT, AP exams, SAT, and all college readiness and advance academic testing campus administrations, with the collaboration of campus and district testing coordinators, counseling team, HS/MS-level administration and other leadership.
  • Create a plan for the review of students individual AP Potential with advisement and appropriate course selection for all students.
  • Coordinate the distribution and Explanation of all students PSAT, ACT, SAT, AP, and TSI and any other college and career readiness Test Scores and inform parents of this information.

Organization Improvement

The coordinator promotes leadership in efforts to improve the school or organization through activities such as the following:

  • Facilitates coordination, support, and create a written process for district and campus/es to follow for college visit field trips.
  • Facilitate coordination and document the process and contact info for university contacts in the counseling and college readiness manual for the college fair between higher education, district, and campus staff.
  • Create and implement a written plan for completion of Junior and Senior survey by all students in each grade level and use the data collected to inform counseling practices to better support students and families in college and career readiness.
  • Ensures completion of the FAFSA and TASFA by seniors each year.
  • Work with English teachers to conduct college-application essay-writing workshops.
  • Provide written and oral direction on campus implementation and advertising on a district substance abuse prevention and intervention program.
  • Create and implement a written plan for seniors’ successful completion of scholarship
  • Support Freshmen and ECHS orientations, as well as the campus registration process for students and families as well as for other like district initiatives in the representation of the counselors’ duties across the district.

Communication and Community Relations

The coordinator promotes a positive tone for school or community relations through activities such as the following:

  • Work with ACC as well as other colleges and universities to ensure a successful partnership.
  • Coordinate, document, and maintain a plan for TASFA/FAFSA Nights and Saturdays for all parent nights and Saturdays for the year in the counseling and college readiness manual.
  • Create a comprehensive College 101 training series for parents and students.
  • Coordinate organization of the Apply Texas Application, Texas Common Application, and ACC application completion by agreed upon dates in collaboration with the district.
  • Facilitate coordination of Personal Graduation Plan (PGP) completion by all 5th-12th-grade students before last Friday in October.
  • Coordinate Personal Gradation Plan Administrator, Counselor, Student/Parent meetings.
  • Parent Nights - collaborate to design and implement parent training on College credits, financial aid, dual credit, ECHS, dual enrollment, advanced placement, college options and access.
  • Serve as a liaison for outside programs like College Forward, Upward Bound, Communities in Schools, Integral Care (formerly ATCIC).
  • Organize partnered home visits as needed throughout the year to facilitate support and communication with and for students and families;
  • Train counselors/staff on the writing of student recommendation letters for college, careers, and scholarships.
  • Promote a College-Going Culture like College Week/ College T-Shirt Days, and other best practices.
  • Serve as a district ambassador projecting and building a positive district image of the district and all its constituents.

Professional Growth and Development

The coordinator provides leadership in professional growth and development through activities such as the following:  

  • Keep current on policy, law, support professional development that will facilitate counseling support and improvement in the district.
  • Stay up on best practices for college readiness, counseling and building the best college-going culture ever.
  • Participate in professional organizations and take the initiative to develop needed professional skills appropriate to job assignment.
  • Disseminate ideas and information to other professionals.
  • Seek and using evaluative information for improvement of performance.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Support and provide feedback to principals, conduct screening interviews, and provide input on counselor evaluations.

 

Equipment

  • Work irregular and extended work hours to include holidays and weekends.
  • May report to various campuses within the district for a full work day.
  • Work with frequent interruptions and maintain emotional control under stress.
  • Continual standing, walking, lifting, carrying, stooping, bending, and kneeling.
  • Limited exposure to hot and cold temperatures.
  • Frequent exposure to temperature extremes (hot and cold), humidity extremes, noise, low or intense illumination vibration. Occasional exposure to biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, insects, mold, fungi), work outside, work around moving objects or vehicles, work on uneven surfaces.
