Description

Primary Purpose:

General supervision, maintain, repair, and install heating and air conditioning systems and equipment throughout the district.  Maintain and provide for the safe condition and operation of all HVAC systems in district facilities.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Education/Certification: 

High school diploma or GED equivalent (Recognized by the Texas Education Agency or regional accrediting agency)

Shall be subject to testing for use of alcohol or controlled substance that violate law or federal regulations

Safe driving record verified by Texas Department of Public Safety (meets and maintains liability coverage eligibility)

Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check. Non-refundable fee (approximately $50.00) paid by employee.

 

Required Experience/Certification:

Five (5) years’ of experience in HVAC field

Commercial HVAC license

EPA certification as required for HVAC license  

EPA Refrigerant Transition and Recovery/Certification

Texas Propane License (or obtained within 90 days of employment)

Experience working in the HVAC field with various HVAC system

Management of HVAC tools, parts, and Freon units

 

Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of HVAC repairs, maintenance and installation techniques

Ability to read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, schematics and written reference material

Familiar with current NEC and HVAC code books and revisions

Knowledge and ability to maintain boilers, cooling towers and chillers

Ability to diagnose and resolve HVAC problems and work independently

Ability to perform mathematical calculations

Ability to comply with all federal and state guidelines related to Freon management and HVAC service

Ability to lift a minimum of fifty (50) lbs.

Organization Management

The HVAC Technician manages administrative, fiscal, and facilities functions responsibly through activities such as the following: 

  • Diagnose and repair malfunctions in various types of heating and air conditioning systems, including rooftop equipment.
  • Install new heating systems, air conditioning systems, refrigeration systems including piping and ductwork piping according to specifications and code.
  • Relocate and expand existing HVAC systems as needed.
  • Repair, replace, or calibrate controls, thermostats, switches, fuses, compressors, reversing valves, fan motors, and electrical components.
  • Wire and connect motors, compressors, temperature controls, and humidity controls according to wiring schematics.
  • Perform duct cleaning and air quality testing as needed.
  • Maintain Freon dispensation records to meet federal requirements.
  • Receive and complete work orders.
  • Select material/hardware and generate time and materials estimates.
  • Procure parts and materials necessary to complete jobs and maintain accurate records of materials and labor use.
  • Maintain inventory of district-owned tools, equipment, and materials.

Organization Improvement

The HVAC Technician promotes efforts to improve the school or organization through activities such as the following: 

  • Follow established inspection procedures and report needed repairs on district buildings and equipment.
  • Maintain preventative maintenance schedules and procedures for all HVAC equipment, including changing of filters and cleaning condensers and coils.
  • Assist the Director of Maintenance to complete energy conservation surveys to realize most efficient, cost-effective use of HVAC energy.
  • Inspect jobs upon completion and ensure areas are clean.
  • Ensure that equipment is in safe operating condition.

Professional Growth and Development

The HVAC Technician provides leadership in professional growth and development through activities such as the following: 

  • Maintain professional trainings to improve work performance and comply with certification requirements.
  • Participate in all meetings and professional development opportunities as required.    

Qualities of an Effective HVAC Technician

The HVAC Technician exhibits qualities such as the following: 

  • Daily attendance and punctuality at work are essential functions of the job.
  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting, climbing, etc.
  • Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Commit to working well with others and maintain an effective working relationship with co-workers, supervisors, school personnel, and the public.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately.
  • Follow guidelines and instructions established by the Maintenance supervisors.
  • Shall comply with District policies, as well as state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Shall comply with the standards of conduct as set out in Board Policy DH (Legal) and (Local) and with any other policies, regulations, and guidelines that impose duties, requirements, or standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • None

Equipment:

HVAC tools and equipment including, but not limited to: meters, gauges, hand and power tools, propane torch, pipe benders, refrigerant reclaiming machine, vacuum pump, soldering equipment, leak detector, manifold pressure gauges, ladders, area work platforms and hoists.  Light truck or van use. 

 

Working Conditions

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

  • Frequent district wide travel.
  • Work prolonged or irregular and extended work hours to include holidays and weekends.
  • Able to respond effectively and appropriately with emergency situations and after-hours emergency calls as needed.
  • Work with frequent interruptions.
  • Strenuous walking, standing, stooping, climbing, pulling pushing, reaching, heavy lifting and carrying.
  • Work outside and inside, on slippery and uneven walking surfaces and ladders.
  • Work in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
  • Exposure to: temperature extremes, humidity extremes, noise, low or intense illumination, vibration, dust, toxic chemicals and materials, and electrical hazards.
