Primary Purpose:

Direct and manage the overall band program for the campus.  Provide students with an opportunity to participate in extracurricular band activities and ensure compliance with all state, University Interscholastic League (UIL) and district requirements.  Plan and facilitate band activities to achieve district, region, and state recognition. 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Education/Certification

Bachelor’s degree from accredited university           

Valid Texas teaching certificate with required endorsement for subject and level assigned or approved alternative certification program.

Safe driving record verified by the Texas Department of Public Safety (meets and maintains liability coverage eligibility)

Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check. Non-refundable fee (approximately $50) paid  by employee.

 

Required Experience:

Three (3) years' teaching and band directing experience

 

Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of overall operation of instrumental music program

Ability to assist in the management of budget and personnel

Knowledge of state and UIL policies governing band

Ability to implement policies, procedures, and data

Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior

Strong instructional communication, public relations, organizational, leadership and interpersonal skills

Professionalism

The Educators' Code of Ethics is set forth in Texas Administrative Code to provide rules for standard practices and ethical conduct toward students, professional colleagues, school officials, parents, and members of the community.

Organization Management

The head band director manages administrative, fiscal, and facilities functions responsibly through activities such as the following: 

  • Establish performance requirements, enforce academic requirements, and verify each student’s ability to participate in band.
  • Provide and coordinate band participation at extracurricular events, including but not limited to, concerts, pep rallies, UIL activities, and community performances.
  • Ensure that programs are cost effective and funds are managed wisely.
  • Compile budgets and cost estimates based on documented program needs.
  • Coordinate fundraising activities and management of funds.
  • Maintain current inventory of all fixed assets with the department.
  • Oversee the process of cleaning, storing, and repairing all band equipment.

Organization Improvement

The head band director promotes leadership in efforts to improve the school or organization through activities such as the following:  

  • Design and implement plans for recruitment and retention of students.
  • Obtain and use evaluative findings (including student achievement data) to determine program effectiveness and ensure program growth and renewal are continuous and responds to student need.
  • Recommendation of policies to improve the campus program.
  • Work collaboratively with all level music instructors to build quality district programming.

Instructional Management

The head band director promotes improvement of instruction through activities such as the following:

  • Direct instrumental performers including concert bands, soloists, ensembles, and sectionals.  
  • Develop and implement plans for the instructional music program and show written evidence of preparation as required.
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the diverse needs of students assigned.
  • Present subject matter according to guidelines established by federal regulations, Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations.
  • Work cooperatively with other teachers to modify curricula as needed for students with special needs (i.e., Special Education, 504, Bilingual).
  • Use technology to strengthen the teaching/learning process.

Student Growth and Development

The head band director fosters student growth and development through activities such as the following:

  • Help students improve skills and techniques, musical performance, and successful practice habits.
  • Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through formative and summative assessments.
  • Oversee all student extracurricular activities including, but not limited to, before and after school activities.
  • Sponsor outside student activities approved by the campus principal.

Classroom Management and Organization Improvement

The head band director works to improve the classroom, school or organization through activities such as the following:

  • Create classroom environment conducive to learning appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
  • Manage students’ behavior in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
  • Select books, equipment, musical instruments, and other instructional materials.

Communication and Community Relations

The head band director promotes a positive tone for school or community relations through activities such as the following:

  • Be a positive role model for students and support the mission of the District.
  • Establish and maintain open communications with parents, students, principals, teachers, and support staff by conducting conferences.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
  • Use effective communication skills to present timely information accurately and clearly.

Professional Growth and Development

The head band director participates in professional growth and development through activities such as the following:

  • Participate in national and state level organizations to stay abreast of latest research and best practices.
  • Attend professional development opportunities related to designated subject area.
  • Read, synthesize, and disseminate research and information related to best practices from books, journals, listservs, Websites, and other media formats.
  • Participate in all meetings and staff development activities to improve job-related skills.

Qualities of an Effective Head Band Director

The head band director exhibits qualities such as the following: 

  • Daily attendance and punctuality at work are essential functions of the job.
  • Keep informed of and comply with state, District, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.
  • Compile, maintain, and file reports, records, and other documents required.
  • Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in work area that could cause an accident and inform supervisor of any conditions that are not correctable immediately.
  • Shall comply with District policies, UIL rules, as well as state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Shall comply with the standards of conduct set out in Board Policy DH (Legal) and (Local) and with any other policies, regulations, and guidelines that impose duties, requirements, and standards.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the supervision of assigned teacher aide(s), volunteer(s), and student teachers as assigned.
  • Collaborate with the campus principal to evaluate assistant band directors.

Equipment:

Computer, computer software programs and peripherals, teacher resource materials and equipment, printer, copier, fax, and other equipment applicable to the position.

 

Working Conditions:

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors

  • Maintain emotional control under stress.
  • Work with frequent interruptions.
  • Work irregular hour and extended work hours to include holidays and weekends.
  • Frequent walking, standing, stooping, bending, pulling and pushing.
  • Occasional light lifting and carrying (15-44 pounds); may lift and move text books and classroom equipment.
  • May be required under specific circumstances to provide physical restraint of students in danger of causing harm to themselves or others.
  • Occasional district wide and statewide travel.
  • Use computer for prolonged period resulting in repetitive hand motion.
  • Frequent exposure to: temperature extremes (hot and cold), humidity extremes, noise, low or intense illumination vibration.
  • Occasional exposure to: biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, etc.), work outside, work around moving objects or vehicles, work on uneven surfaces.
