Primary Purpose:
Performs major and minor mechanical repairs with minimum supervision to ensure proper performance and safety of district vehicles. Performs assigned work following established policies and procedures.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education/Certification
High school diploma or GED equivalent (recognized by the Texas Education Agency or Regional Accrediting Agency)
Valid Texas driver’s license (A or B CDL) with the ability to obtain the P and S endorsement within 90 days of hire date
Ability to obtain the Bus Driver Certification from TEA within 90 days of hire date
Ability to obtain and maintain DOT physical yearly
Must have a driving record that is acceptable according to minimum standards adopted by DPS
Shall be subject to testing for use of alcohol or controlled substance that violate law or federal regulations
Ability to obtain TASBT certification within one year of hire date
Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check. Non-refundable fee (approximately $50) paid by employee.
Required Experience: Two (2) years’ direct experience in general repairs on trucks and/or buses
Knowledge/Skills:
Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and communicate effectively with diverse groups of individuals in a professional manner
Must have or be able to obtain a State Vehicle Inspection Certification within 90 days of employment
Must pass annual medical examination per Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
Diesel and Gas Diagnostic, maintenance and repair experience preferred

Organization Management
The mechanic manages administrative, fiscal, and facilities functions responsibly through activities such as the following:
- Makes emergency calls as assigned by supervisors when vehicles have problems in the field.
- Services vehicles according to established preventive maintenance schedule. Including but not limited to: rotates and balances tires, changes oil and filters, lubricates vehicle parts, inspects and replaces hoses, belts, mirrors, lamps, and maintains all fluid levels.
- Performs preventive maintenance, including bleeding of air tanks, on shop equipment according to established schedules.
- Welding and minor body work as needed.
- Follows established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and climbing. Operates tools, equipment, and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures.
- Maintains shop, equipment, and tools in safe operating condition and perform preventative maintenance on shop equipment according to established schedules.
- Promptly reports any unsafe conditions in work area to the supervisor and/or safety officer.
- Accurately prepares work orders showing total time and materials for each vehicle.
Vehicle Operations
The mechanic manages vehicle operations and responsibilities through activities such as the following:
- Route buses and operate buses and district vehicles as needed.

Equipment:
School bus and district vehicles. Computer, telephone, two-way radio, automotive diagnostic equipment, wheel balancing equipment, tire repair equipment, small hand tools, drills, drill press, grinder, air-powered tools, welding torch, torque wrench, jack and lift equipment, and other equipment applicable to the position.

- Work irregular hours and respond to after-hour emergency calls as needed.
- Walking, standing, climbing, heavy lifting, carrying, stooping, bending, kneeling, reaching, pushing, and pulling.
- Work outside and inside, in extreme hot and cold temperatures, around moving objects, vehicles, and machinery with moving parts.
- Exposure to dampness and humidity, toxic chemicals, exhaust and vehicle fumes, gasoline, and diesel fuel.
- Exposure to electrical hazards; work around machinery with moving parts; may work in tight or enclosed spaces.
- May work alone; prolonged or irregular and extended work hours to include holidays and weekends.
- May have to drive and transport students depending on department needs
- Prolonged to moderate driving; moderate walking; frequent climbing stairs, grasping/squeezing, wrist and shoulder flexion/extension, and reaching.
- Maintain emotional control under stress.
- District wide and statewide travel.
- Lifting: heavy lifting and carrying (up to 50 pounds) on a daily basis.
