Primary Purpose:

  • Serve as a resident teacher while participating in a year-long clinical experience under the guidance of a mentor teacher.
  • Observe and learn on the job in preparation for a teaching career while earning a degree or completing teacher certification requirements. 
  • Work alongside assigned mentor teacher and actively engage in as many elements of the classroom as possible. 
  • Participate in instructional planning, data review, and improvement throughout the year.

Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in an Educator Preparation Program (EPP) 
  • Actively working toward Teacher Certification and an Undergraduate Degree
  • Strong work ethic, open to feedback, with willingness to implement next steps, commitment to diversity and equity, and belief that all students can achieve. 

 

Education/Certification:

  • High School diploma or GED (Recognized by the Texas Education Agency or Regional Accrediting Agency)
  • Candidate must have a satisfactory outcome of a fingerprinting background check. Non-refundable fee (approximately $50) paid by employee.

  • Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior effectively
  • Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated effectiveness working with people who have differing in cultural backgrounds and/or personal characteristics
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Knowledge of general office equipment
  • Preferred academic content knowledge
  • Ability to implement district instructional and classroom management strategies

 

Experience:

  • Experience working with children

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

The Educators' Code of Ethics is set forth in the Texas Administrative Code to provide rules for standard practices and ethical conduct toward students, professional colleagues, school officials, parents, and members of the community.

Instructional Management

  • Ability to learn to Co-Teach and deliver lessons prepared by the cooperating mentor teacher and experienced team members.
  • Provide small-and-large group instruction under the direction of the mentor teacher using tools and rubrics developed by the mentor teacher and team
  • Ability to learn to supervise student skills practice, projects, and digital learning; monitor independent work time in classroom while teacher provides instruction. 
  • Work with the mentor teacher to monitor and improve instruction with formative and summative assessments, grading, data analysis, and rubrics to identify next steps. 
  • Ability to learn to plan backward to align all lessons, activities, and assessments with high-expectations standards and curriculum. 

Student Growth and Development

  • Identify and address individual students’ social, emotional and behavioral learning needs and barriers. 
  • Meet with a mentor teacher to ensure alignment of instructional vision and delivery and to troubleshoot students’ persistent learning challenges. 
  • Implement and suggest improvements to assessments that accurately measure student progress.

Classroom Management and Organization Improvement

  • Manage procedures, supervise students, and develop students’ social-emotional skills during transitions.
  • Hold students accountable for ambitious, measurable, high expectations of behavior and engagement. 

Communication and Community Relations

  • Receive and respond to feedback from the mentor teacher and the site coordinator before, during, and after informal and formal observations. 
  • Co-plan with mentor teacher and team 
  • Collaborate with other grade-level or content members

Professional Growth and Development

  • Attend professional development prior to the start of the school year and on-going throughout the school year

Qualities of an Effective Teacher Resident

  • Daily attendance and punctuality at work are essential functions of the job.
  • Keep informed of and comply with state, District, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.
  • Compile, maintain, and file reports, records, and other documents as required.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in the work area that could cause an accident and inform the supervisor of any conditions that are not correctable immediately.
  • Shall comply with District policies, as well as state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Shall comply with the standards of conduct set out in Board Policy DH (Legal) and (Local) and with any other policies, regulations, and guidelines that impose duties, requirements, and standards.
  • Maintain confidentiality.

  • None

 

Equipment

  • Computer, computer software programs and peripherals, teacher resource materials and audiovisual equipment, adaptive equipment, laminating machine, printer, copier, fax machine, wheelchair lift, ramp, oxygen gauges, and other equipment applicants to position.  

Working Conditions
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors

  • Maintain emotional control under stress.
  • Work with frequent interruptions.
  • Work irregular hours and extended work hours to include holidays and weekends.
  • Frequent walking, standing, stooping, bending, pulling, and pushing.
  • Occasional light lifting and carrying (15-44 pounds); may lift and move textbooks and classroom equipment.
  • May be required under specific circumstances to provide physical restraint of students in danger of causing harm to themselves or others.
  • Occasional district wide and statewide travel.
  • Use a computer for prolonged periods resulting in repetitive hand motion.
  • Frequent exposure to temperature extremes (hot and cold), humidity extremes, noise, low or intense illumination vibration.
  • Occasional exposure to biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, etc.), work outside, work around moving objects or vehicles, work on uneven surfaces.
  • This program may require feeding, diapering, and caring for severely handicapped students.
