Description

Primary Purpose:

Direct and manage the overall program of extracurricular and intramural athletics for the district. Provide each student with the opportunity to participate in an extracurricular athletic activity and ensure compliance with all federal, state, University Interscholastic League (UIL), and local requirements.

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

Education/Certification:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university

Valid Texas teaching certificate 

Current CPR, First Aid and AED Certification preferred or ability to obtain within the first 90 days of employment

Clear and valid Texas commercial driver’s license with Passenger (p) and School Bus (S) endorsement (or obtain within the first 120 days of employment)

Candidate must have a satisfactory outcome of a fingerprinting background check.  Non-refundable fee (approximately $50.00) paid by the employee.

 

Experience/Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of overall operations of an athletic program

Knowledge of federal, state, and UIL policies governing athletics

Ability to implement policy and procedures

Ability to interpret data

Ability to manage budget and personnel 

Excellent public relations, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Ability to speak effectively before groups of students, parents, and staff

 

Required Experience:

3 years of teaching and high school coaching experience 

3 years experience in a leadership role

Professionalism

Organization Management

The director manages administrative, fiscal, and facilities functions responsibly through activities such as the following:

  • Direct and manage the district's athletic program and facilities.
  • Develop and administer a budget based on documented needs and ensure that operations are cost effective and funds are managed wisely.
  • Maintain a current inventory of supplies and equipment and recommend disposal and replacement of equipment when necessary.
  • Establish and maintain physical and academic eligibility requirements for participation in each sport, and verify each athlete’s eligibility.

  • Obtain and use evaluative findings (including student achievement data) to gauge athletic program effectiveness and ensure that program renewal is continuous and responsive to student needs.

Organization Improvement

The director promotes efforts to improve the school organization through activities such as the following:

  • Manage district athletic operations including directing ticket sales, employing game officials, and ensuring preparation of facilities.
  • Prepare and approve all interscholastic game schedules.
  • Approve or arrange transportation, lodging, and meals for out-of-town athletic events.
  • Oversee the process of cleaning, repairing, and storing of all district athletic equipment including maintaining a current inventory of supplies, equipment, and fixed assets and recommending disposal and replacement of equipment.
  • Coordinate the use of all athletic facilities by nonschool groups.
  • Plan, organize, and oversee all athletic award programs.

Organization Climate

The director fosters a positive school organizational climate through activities such as the following:

  • Direct district athletic leadership program
  • Implement district student management policies, communicate expected student behavior related to athletics, and ensure enforcement of student discipline in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
  • Establish and maintain open lines of communication on vital issues with parents, students, and teachers.
  • Analyze ongoing assessment of student achievement through formal and informal data collection

Policy, Reports, and Law

The director leads the department in compliance with all policies, reporting, and laws:

  • Implement the policies established by federal law, state law, State Board of Education rule, UIL rules, and local board policy in the area of athletics.
  • Direct the athletic policies and work with coaches to publish, implement and update coaches’ handbooks and athletics codes 
  • Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required.
  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.

Personnel Management

The director provides oversight and manages personnel through activities such as the following:

  • Responsible for the administration and supervision of employees of the DVISD Athletic Program.
  • Prepare, review, and revise job descriptions for the athletic department.
  • Recruit, select, train, supervise, and evaluate all athletic department personnel and make recommendations relative to assignment, retention, discipline, and dismissal.
  • Mediate the resolution of problems, issues and concerns that may arise between personnel and athletic programs.
  • Develop training options and/or improvement plans for employees to ensure exemplary operation in the area of athletics.

Communications and Community Relations

The director promotes a positive tone for school or community relations through activities such as the following:

  • Articulate the district’s mission and goals in the area of athletics to the community and solicit its support in realizing the mission.
  • Demonstrate awareness of district and community needs, initiate activities to meet those needs, and use appropriate and effective techniques to encourage community and parent involvement.
  • Support athletic booster club activities.
  • Collaborate with parents, school administrators, coaches, and athletes to promote student success by ensuring that all DVISD athletic staff follow and implement the DVISD Academic Plan for Athletes.
  • Lead a positive environment and image for the athletic program through effective interpersonal relationships with administration, faculty, parents, teachers, and community members.
  • Seek support for athletic programs by being involved in community activities that foster rapport between the school district and larger community.

Professional Growth and Development

The director provides leadership in professional growth and development through activities such as the following:

  • Design systems for ongoing improvement within the Athletic Department.
  • Assist with planning and providing staff development for new and veteran coaches.
  • Stay current in all areas of athletic personnel management.
  • Pursue/participate in professional development activities in the areas of Athletics. 
  • Read, synthesize, and disseminate research and information related to best practices from books, journals, listservs, Websites, and other media formats.

Qualities of a Director 

The director exhibits the following qualities: 

  • Daily attendance and punctuality at work are essential functions of the job.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Supervise, evaluate, and recommend the hiring and firing of coaches and support staff.

 

Equipment:

 Personal computer, printer, calculator, telephone, copier, fax machine, scanner, coaching resource materials and instructional equipment, automated external defibrillator, school bus operations, and other equipment applicable to the position.

 

Working Conditions:

  • Maintain emotional control under stress.
  • Work with frequent interruptions.
  • Work irregular hours and extended work hours to include holidays and weekends.
  • Frequent walking, standing, stooping, bending, pulling and pushing.
  • Occasional light lifting and carrying (15-44 pounds).  
  • Frequent district wide travel and occasional travel outside district and statewide.
  • Use computer for prolonged period resulting in repetitive hand motion.
  • Frequent exposure to: temperature extremes (hot and cold), humidity extremes, noise, low or intense illumination vibration. 
  • Occasional exposure to: biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, etc.), work outside, work around moving objects or vehicles, work on uneven surfaces.
